Keith Hayashi, Hawaii's Superintendent of Education, recalls when I visited his campus. It's testament to what strong leadership and an innovative idea did to change the reputation and trajectory of Waipahu High School.
It recalls my 2009 visit to campus when, as an FBI Agent, I arrived with hard statistics and a new curriculum I had written (and for years personally taught) at Waipahu High School. The curricula proved highly successful and helped shift expectations for what the school and neighborhood could become. It was a testbed for what is now the Career Academies model in Hawaii's public schools. Seeing that moment remembered 17 years later carries deep personal meaning. I’m proud that my name and efforts remain part of the story and even prouder of how far the school and community have come.
