About Dr. Laanui

Aloha!

Dr. Arnold Laanui has spent his career working where ethics, risk, and institutional decision‑making collide. His path began with 25 years in the FBI, where he investigated corruption, cyber intrusions, and national security threats. He served on FBI SWAT, earned Hawaii’s TOP COP award, and became known for explaining how systems break—and how they can be rebuilt with discipline and integrity.

Ethics in Education

Teaching became a second calling. As an FBI Advanced Instructor and Adjunct Faculty member at the FBI Academy, Laanui spent nearly two decades designing training and supporting educators in communities across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and the United States. His initiatives, including the Internet Safety Awards, the Adopt‑a‑School program, and the PROVE Project, helped schools navigate the pressures of technology, safety, and social change.

His search for better ways to prevent harm led him back to graduate school, where he earned a doctorate in education and pioneered research in predictive analytics and risk forecasting.  His work reshaped how the FBI understood “risk” and informed new data science protocols within the Directorate of Intelligence, where he later led research and evaluated high‑value intelligence sources.

Why Ethical Leadership Matters

Laanui left federal service in 2019 to work directly in education.  He joined the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education shortly before the COVID‑19 pandemic and helped guide 17 campuses and 14,000 students through the crisis. He later served as President and CEO of Damien Memorial School, his alma mater, where he strengthened financial systems, expanded academic pathways, and secured the largest grant in the school’s history.

A whistleblower dispute became yet another defining chapter in his career.  In 2024–2025, he successfully navigated this dispute which concluded in a confidential settlement.  It sharpened his understanding of how organizations behave under pressure and reinforced his commitment to ethical leadership, transparency, and the protection of those who speak up.

"Doing the right thing rarely makes you popular — but it always makes you credible."

Going Where AI Can't — Ethics

The world is changing faster than ever — fueled by AI and emerging technologies that are reshaping how we learn, teach, work and communicate.  These technologies make ethical missteps easier than ever.

Now more than ever — ethics aren't electives — they are mandatory.

Dr. Laanui now helps leaders and institutions navigate ethical risk and prevent crises by turning moral clarity into practical frameworks that strengthen judgment, accountability, and institutional resilience.
